As we live in an animate world, so our creations, our derivative creations, have life, motion, vibration, soul. Writing totally has a feeling and a soul. When I write a draft or partial draft, if I come back to it, and it doesn't sing to me, doesn't have music, doesn't contain that bit of emotion and soul that I wanted to infuse it with, I start over. As you say, the seed didn't take hold in the soil.
